In short
In the UK we have checked 15 RC tracks, 15 model airfields and 8 waters for model boats one by one on the clubs‘ own websites. A guest day ticket costs £10 to £15 at the clubs that state a price. The UK is not in the EU, and the CAA does not recognise registrations from EU countries: from 250 g you need a UK Flyer ID (free after an online test) and an Operator ID (£12.34 a year, 18 and over). As a temporary BMFA member, you may use a UK host’s Operator ID instead of your own, with their consent.
The governing body for RC car racing is the BRCA, the British member of EFRA. Its membership includes liability insurance, which is why many clubs require it for club racing; newcomers can usually race two or three meetings without it. Almost all the model flying clubs on our list are affiliated to the BMFA, which has over 750 clubs and holds an Article 16 authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Many model boat clubs are affiliated to the MPBA, sailing clubs to the MYA.

What are the rules in the UK?
These associations are responsible in the UK:
- British Radio Car Association (BRCA): According to its own website, BRCA is the UK’s governing body for RC car racing. It runs twelve sections, from 1/12 Oval to 1/5 Circuit, with national championships and series. Membership (2026: adult £30, junior £15, non-driving £20 per year) includes third-party liability insurance and is required to race in club events and BRCA national or regional series. EFRA’s federation list names BRCA as its member for Great Britain.
- British Model Flying Association (BMFA): According to its website, BMFA is recognised by the Royal Aero Club and the FAI as the national governing body for the sport of model flying in the UK. More than 750 affiliated clubs provide over 1,000 flying sites. It holds an Article 16 authorisation from the CAA (issued for 2026 on 17 December 2025), offers £25 million public liability cover and runs the Achievement Scheme and competitions.
- Large Model Association (LMA): LMA supports the building and flying of large model aircraft, offers practical help and guidance on the legal requirements, and runs model aircraft shows and fly-ins across the UK. In 2026 these include the Much Marcle Large Model Airshow (5–6 September 2026) and fly-ins at Tibenham and Elvington. According to the CAA, model aircraft over 25 kg need a permit from LMA under its Over 25kg Scheme.
- FPV UK: FPV UK was founded in 2009 to champion and protect FPV (first person view) flying as a hobby and sport; its members fly all kinds of drones and radio control models, by line of sight or with FPV goggles. Membership costs £24.99 a year and includes £5 million public liability cover, £1 million commercial public liability cover and the association’s Article 16 Operational Authorisation.
- Model Power Boat Association (MPBA): Founded in 1924, MPBA describes itself as the governing body for model boating in the UK. It covers the racing classes Scale, Multi (FSR-V), Tethered Hydros, Fast Electrics, Straight Running, Club 500 and Circuit (FSR H/O), and its regulations are aligned with NAVIGA and iMBRA. You can join through an affiliated club or individually via the Countrywide Club.
- Model Yachting Association (MYA): MYA is the representative body for radio and free sailing in the UK and administers both disciplines. It is a Divisional Member of the International Radio Sailing Association (IRSA) and affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). Its racing calendar covers classes such as IOM, DF95, Marblehead, Ten Rater and A Class, for example the Scottish District IOM Championship at Kinghorn on 24 October 2026.
The key points from the law and official pages (retrieved 11/10/2026):
- The competent authority for drones and model aircraft is the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Its Drone and Model Aircraft Code is based on UK law: the UK versions of Regulations (EU) 2019/947 and 2019/945 (UK Regulation (EU) 2019/947, the UAS Implementing Regulation, and UK Regulation (EU) 2019/945, the UAS Delegated Regulation) and the Air Navigation Order 2016 as amended in 2018 and 2020 (UK Civil Aviation Authority – Background: Drones and model aircraft in the law).
- Before flying most drones or model aircraft outdoors you must take a theory test and register with the CAA. From 250 g to under 25 kg (or class UK1 to UK4) you need a Flyer ID and an Operator ID; from 100 g to under 250 g you need a Flyer ID and, if the aircraft has a camera, an Operator ID as well. Below 100 g no Flyer ID is required, and if you only fly indoors you need neither ID. The CAA does not recognise registrations or qualifications from other countries, including EU countries, so if you come from abroad you must get a Flyer ID and Operator ID from the CAA before flying in the UK (UK Civil Aviation Authority – Registering to fly drones and model aircraft).
- An Operator ID costs £12.34 and is valid for one year; you must be at least 18 years old to get one (UK Civil Aviation Authority – Get an Operator ID).
- You get a Flyer ID by passing the theory test. It is free of charge and valid for 5 years. From the age of 13 you can get it yourself; younger children need help from a parent or guardian (UK Civil Aviation Authority – Get a Flyer ID).
- Children under 13 also need a Flyer ID and must have a parent or guardian with them when they take the test. Under-12s may only fly when supervised by someone aged 16 or over; young people aged 13 to 17 can fly unsupervised. An Operator ID is only available from 18, so if your child owns a drone or model aircraft that requires one, a parent or guardian must register (UK Civil Aviation Authority – Children and parent guidance).
- Your drone or model aircraft must never be more than 120 m (400 ft) from the closest point of the earth’s surface. You must keep a horizontal distance of at least 50 m from uninvolved people and must not fly over them, and at least 150 m from residential, recreational, commercial and industrial areas; never fly over crowds. Aircraft under 250 g and classes UK0, UK1 and C0 (and C1 from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027) may fly closer to people and in such areas (UK Civil Aviation Authority – The Drone and Model Aircraft Code: Where you can fly (points 3 to 9)).
- Most airports, airfields and spaceports have a Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ). You must never fly in it without permission from the airport, airfield or spaceport; if you endanger the safety of an aircraft, you could go to prison for five years. NATS’s airspace restriction map shows many FRZs, but some short-notice restrictions are missing. Drone apps may also be out of date, and byelaws are unlikely to be shown on apps, so check signs and local sources (UK Civil Aviation Authority – The Drone and Model Aircraft Code: Where you can fly (points 3 to 9)).
- Model aircraft clubs and associations can apply to the CAA for an Article 16 Authorisation. According to the CAA, BMFA, FPV UK, the Large Model Association (LMA) and the Scottish Aeromodellers Association (SAA) hold one; as a member you fly under your association’s framework and follow its conditions, and some associations let you take the Flyer ID test with them. Model aircraft displays must be operated under a relevant Article 16 authorisation, and model aircraft over 25 kg (‚large model aircraft‘) need a permit from the LMA under its Over 25kg Scheme (UK Civil Aviation Authority – Model aircraft).
- The CAA’s Article 16 authorisation for BMFA (UAS 7068, Issue 8) is valid from 1 January to 31 December 2026 for the association and its members. Non-UK residents may also fly under it if they hold temporary or full BMFA membership and follow BMFA rules; a non-UK operator can meet the registration requirement by displaying the Operator ID of a UK ‚host‘ operator with the host’s agreement. The 120 m (400 ft) limit still applies in principle, with flights higher only under set conditions, including visual line of sight and a mass of no more than 7.5 kg (special rule for gliders up to 14 kg). Remote pilots need a Flyer ID and must pass the CAA or the BMFA online test; operators must be at least 18 (UK Civil Aviation Authority – Article 16 Authorisation UAS 7068, Issue 8 (The Society of Model Aeronautical Engineers Ltd / BMFA)).
- Any new model of drone or model aircraft placed on the market from 1 January 2026 must carry a UK class mark (UK0 to UK6; UK0 under 250 g, UK1 under 900 g, UK2 under 4 kg, UK3 to UK6 under 25 kg). Until 31 December 2027 you can fly an aircraft with a European C class mark as if it were the corresponding UK class. Aircraft without a UK or European class mark are legacy aircraft and are flown by weight: under 250 g in Over People (A1), under 2 kg in Near People (A2, with an A2 Certificate of Competency), under 25 kg in Far from People (A3) (UK Civil Aviation Authority – Class marks).
- Remote ID has been mandatory since 1 January 2026 for UK1, UK2 and UK3 aircraft in the open category. From 1 January 2028, according to the CAA, you must use Remote ID for all drone and model operations unless you have an exemption from the CAA; this then also covers, among others, class UK4 as well as non-class-marked and privately built aircraft of 100 g or more with a camera (UK Civil Aviation Authority – Remote ID (RID)).
- If you fly a drone or model aircraft for any commercial reason, you must have at least third-party insurance that complies with Assimilated Regulation (EU) 785/2004. According to the CAA, insurance is optional if you only fly for recreation, sport or as a hobby, but since you could be liable for injury or damage you cause, it suggests you may want third-party cover (UK Civil Aviation Authority – Insurance requirements).

Missing an entry?
For Northern Ireland, Wales and North West England we have not yet found an RC track with current evidence on the club’s own website, for North West England and the Midlands no model flying field yet, and for Scotland, Northern Ireland, London and the East of England no model boat water yet. Many British clubs only announce their dates on Facebook. Do you know an active club that is missing here? Write to us via the contact page (in German) – we check the tip on the club’s website and add it to the list.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find an RC track in the UK?
This page lists 15 verified tracks in 9 regions, with surface, classes and guest driver rules. At the clubs that state a price, a race day costs guests £10 to £15; some clubs let newcomers race free of charge on their first visit.
Do I need a licence for RC car racing in the UK?
For club racing, many clubs require BRCA membership because it includes liability insurance; in 2026 it costs £30 a year for adults and £15 for juniors. At many clubs you can race two or three meetings as a newcomer without BRCA membership, at others it is compulsory from the first race.
Is my drone registration from an EU country valid in the UK?
No. The United Kingdom is not in the EU, and the CAA does not recognise registrations or proof of competence from other countries. From 250 g you need a Flyer ID, which you get free of charge for 5 years after an online test, and an Operator ID for £12.34 a year; from 100 g to under 250 g the Flyer ID is enough, unless the model has a camera.
Can I fly as a guest at a British model flying field?
Often yes, but almost always only by arrangement and under the supervision of a member. Many clubs on our list require BMFA membership because of the insurance, some also the BMFA A certificate, and some limit guest visits to three days a year. If you do not live in the United Kingdom, the BMFA’s Article 16 authorisation allows you to become a temporary member and, with their consent, display a UK host’s Operator ID on your model; you still need a Flyer ID.
Is insurance compulsory in the UK?
Not for purely recreational flying, according to the CAA, though it recommends it; liability insurance is compulsory for commercial flights. In practice most clubs require insurance, usually through membership of the BRCA, BMFA, MPBA or MYA or through the club itself.
