What are the rules in Liechtenstein?

These associations are responsible in Liechtenstein:

  • Schweizerischer Modellflugverband (SMV): The model aviation division of the Aero-Club of Switzerland; it represents model pilots and clubs towards the authorities and offers collective insurance. Its club directory also lists the Modellfluggruppe Liechtenstein (Schaan) with the Rheinau airfield in Eschen.

The key points from the law and official pages (retrieved 11/10/2026):

  • In Liechtenstein, the use of drones is governed by Swiss aviation law and Liechtenstein data protection law. General questions and permits are handled by the Civil Aviation Division of the Office of Building Construction and Spatial Planning, data protection questions by the Data Protection Office; reports against drone pilots can be made to the National Police (Liechtenstein National Police – Drones).
  • Under the Aviation Act (LFG) of 11 April 2024, the Swiss aviation legislation applicable on the basis of the exchange of notes with Switzerland applies in Liechtenstein; the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) performs tasks on behalf of the Liechtenstein authorities. Permits for unmanned aircraft are granted by the Office of Building Construction and Spatial Planning (AHR) – with FOCA examining the requirements – as are exemptions for geographical zones under Article 15 of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 (Gesetzesdatenbank gesetze.li – Luftfahrtgesetz (LFG) vom 11. April 2024, LR 748.0, LGBl. 2024 Nr. 224 (Art. 2, 3, 5, 9, 11)).
  • According to the Government, the European drone rules apply in Liechtenstein within the framework of the applicable aviation law; requirements differ depending on risk and drone category. Sensitive areas have no-fly or restricted zones, for example around the Government Building, the Parliament Building and Vaduz Castle, and at Balzers heliport (Landtag des Fürstentums Liechtenstein – Kleine Anfrage „Schutz vor unzulässigen Drohnen“ (Abg. Sebastian Gassner, 02.09.2026), Antwort von Regierungsrat Daniel Oehry vom 04.09.2026).
  • If you operate a drone or model aircraft weighing more than 250 g, you need liability cover of at least CHF 1 million. The proof of insurance must be issued to you as the pilot and carried when you fly (Liechtenstein National Police – Drones).
  • The area ‘Government Building – Parliament – Vaduz Castle’ is a permanent no-fly zone for drones. Parts of the municipality of Balzers are also in a no-fly zone because of the nearby heliport and the Bad Ragaz airfield; all zones are shown in detail on the FOCA drone map (map.geo.admin.ch) (Liechtenstein National Police – Drones).
  • Flying with video goggles (FPV) is permitted within your field of vision if a second person at the same location monitors the flight and can intervene at any time. Automated (autonomous) flights are permitted within your field of vision as long as you can take over control at any time (Liechtenstein National Police – Drones).
  • If you are registered as a drone operator in Switzerland via FOCA’s dLIS platform, FOCA states that you may also fly your drone in Liechtenstein, provided no authorisation is required. Remote pilot certificates issued via dLIS are also valid in Liechtenstein (FOCA – Frequently asked questions on drones (FAQ)).
  • If your drone has a camera switched on, data protection law applies – except for recordings solely for personal or family use, but this exemption no longer applies once you publish them or pass them on to third parties. Recordings of people are only lawful with a legal justification such as consent, and according to the Data Protection Office, drone recordings of publicly accessible spaces are subject to notification (Art. 5(7) of the Data Protection Act) (Datenschutzstelle Fürstentum Liechtenstein – Drohnen).
