In short

In Denmark we have checked 5 RC tracks, 13 model airfields and 3 waters for model boats one by one on the clubs‘ own websites. A guest day ticket costs DKK 50 to 125 at the clubs that state a price. EU rules apply to drones and model aircraft; above 250 g you need liability insurance with cover of at least 0.75 million special drawing rights. At Modelflyvning Danmark fields you can only fly as a guest if you are a member of your national model flying federation, with proof of insurance and at least the A1/A3 certificate.

In Denmark, RC car racing is run by the motor sport federation DASU as its MRC section: you race in a club with a DASU licence, which has been free of charge for MRC drivers since 2019. Model flying is organised by Modelflyvning Danmark (MDK). Since 01/01/2026 the federation has held an Article 16 authorisation from the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority (Trafikstyrelsen) and acts as operator for its members at approved club fields. We have not found an umbrella organisation for model boats with its own up-to-date website.

What are the rules in Denmark?

These associations are responsible in Denmark:

  • DASU – Dansk Automobil Sports Union (MRC section): DASU is Denmark’s motor sport federation and is listed with EFRA as the federation for Denmark; RC car racing is its MRC section – according to DASU its youngest discipline, with on-road classes from 1:10 touring cars (electric and nitro) through 1:8 track and 1:6 truck to 1:5 touring cars, plus 1:8 off-road buggy. You need to be a member of a DASU club and hold a licence; since a decision of 16 November 2019, MRC drivers have been exempt from DASU membership and licence fees.
  • Modelflyvning Danmark (MDK): By its own account, Modelflyvning Danmark is the joint organisation of all model pilots in Denmark, and it holds Trafikstyrelsen’s Article 16 authorisation for flying at approved club fields. Membership (2026: DKK 700 a year for adults) includes liability insurance for recreational flying with cover of up to SDR 750,000 / EUR 1,000,000, valid worldwide with the exceptions set out in the policy; MDK can only accept members with an address in Denmark.

The key points from the law and official pages (retrieved 10/10/2026):

  • The competent authority for drones and model aircraft is Trafikstyrelsen (Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority). Anyone who owns a drone in Denmark registers online with it as a drone operator using MitID – required above 250 g and also below 250 g if the drone carries a camera or other sensor (toy drones are exempt) – and labels their drones legibly with the registration number (Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority – Registration as a drone operator).
  • Trafikstyrelsen charges a fee of DKK 65 (2026) for registering as a drone operator, whether as a private individual, company or organisation. Enrolling for the A1/A3 or A2 exam costs DKK 130 each (2026); the fee is non-refundable even if you fail (Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority – Fees and charges).
  • Every drone operator in Denmark needs liability insurance covering damage to third parties. For drones above 250 g the minimum cover is 0.75 million Special Drawing Rights (SDR); below 250 g the insurer decides whether the cover is sufficient (Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority – Registration as a drone operator).
  • For drones over 250 g – including home-built or non-C-marked legacy models under 25 kg as well as C1 and C2 drones – you need the A1/A3 drone certificate, obtained by passing an online theory exam (three attempts after payment). For A2 you first need A1/A3 and practical self-training, then pass an exam in person at a test centre recognised by Trafikstyrelsen; the drone certificate is valid for five years (Trafikstyrelsen – Overblik over dronecertifikaterne).
  • The Danish Drone Order (Dronebekendtgørelsen, BEK No. 1649 of 12 December 2023) supplements the EU rules: in the open category the remote pilot must be at least 15, while drones under 250 g including payload may be flown from age 12. Operators generally keep a logbook of their flights – private individuals flying within a model flying club are exempt (Bekendtgørelse om supplerende bestemmelser til gennemførelsesforordning (EU) 2019/947 (Dronebekendtgørelsen), BEK nr. 1649 af 12/12/2023).
  • In the open category, the unmanned aircraft must be kept within 120 m of the closest point of the surface of the earth during flight; the only exception is when overflying an obstacle (Article 4(1)(e) of Regulation (EU) 2019/947) (EUR-Lex – Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947, Article 4).
  • As an operator you only need to register once – in the country where you live. Drone certificates issued by an EASA member state are valid in all other EASA member states, including Denmark (Trafikstyrelsen – Dronen med på rejsen).
  • Trafikstyrelsen’s drone zone map (dronezoner.eu) shows where you may fly and where restrictions apply. To fly in a geographical UAS zone – such as areas critical to flight safety or security, or Natura 2000 sites – you must apply for permission from Trafikstyrelsen (Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority – UAS geo zones).
  • In Denmark model aircraft count as drones, most of them as legacy drones (home-built or not C-marked). Outside a club, models under 250 g are flown in subcategory A1 (never over assemblies of people) and heavier ones in A3 – at least 150 m from residential, commercial, industrial and recreational areas and with no uninvolved persons within the flight area (Trafikstyrelsen – Modelflyvning i Danmark).
  • For club flying, Trafikstyrelsen has granted Modelflyvning Danmark (MDK) an authorisation under Article 16 of Regulation (EU) 2019/947 (dated 18 December 2025, in force since 1 January 2026, valid for five years). It applies to MDK members at model flying fields approved by MDK: there MDK acts as drone operator on behalf of its members, and no drone certificate is required in the open category (Modelflyvning Danmark – Tilladelse i henhold til artikel 16 i droneforordningen).
  • Under the Article 16 authorisation, models up to 25 kg may be flown in the open category at MDK fields; 25 to 50 kg only with MDK large-model approval, a large-model certificate for the pilot and at approved large-model fields. Flights above 120 m (400 ft) require a restricted area to be established, and pilots under 15 fly under the supervision of an adult instructor until they hold the MDK competence certificate (Modelflyvning Danmark – Tilladelse i henhold til artikel 16 i droneforordningen).
  • As a guest at an MDK field – from Denmark or abroad – you must be a member of a national model flying federation in your home country and be able to prove insurance covering drone flights (Section 4 of the Danish Drone Order). You also need a competence certificate issued by MDK or, as a guest from abroad, at least an A1/A3 certificate; every guest is recorded in the field’s logbook or guest book (Modelflyvning Danmark – Tilladelse i henhold til artikel 16 i droneforordningen, afsnit 6).

Missing an entry?

For North Jutland we have not yet found an RC track with current evidence on its own club website – the Aalborg RC facility was still under construction when we checked – and for Central and North Jutland no club water yet. Many Danish club websites could not be accessed, especially in North and South Jutland. Do you know an active club that is missing here? Write to us via the contact page (in German) – we check the tip on the club’s website and add it to the list.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find an RC track in Denmark?

This page lists 5 verified tracks in 4 regions, with surface, classes and guest driver rules. Clubs race in the DASU MRC section; for that you need membership of a DASU club and a licence.

Can I fly at a Danish club field as a model pilot from abroad?

Yes, as a guest at a Modelflyvning Danmark field: you must be a member of a national model flying federation in your home country, show proof of insurance that covers drone flights and hold at least an A1/A3 certificate. Every guest is entered in the field’s logbook.

Do I need to register again in Denmark?

No. As an operator you only register once, in the country where you live. Drone certificates from an EASA member state are also valid in Denmark.

How high can I fly in Denmark?

In the open category no higher than 120 m above ground. At Modelflyvning Danmark fields, flights above 120 m are only possible if a restricted area has been established for them.

Is insurance compulsory in Denmark?

Yes. Every drone operator needs liability insurance for damage to third parties, with cover of at least 0.75 million special drawing rights above 250 g. The Modelflyvning Danmark membership fee includes liability insurance, but only people with an address in Denmark can become members.
