RC tracks 6
Model airfields 4
Boat waters 0
Status October 2026
In short
In Greece we have checked 6 RC tracks and 4 model airfields one by one. Still without current evidence: waters for model boats. Because few clubs here keep a website of their own with dates, an event in the national federation’s calendar or results also counts as evidence; each profile says where its details come from. A guest day ticket costs €25 at the clubs that state a price. EU rules apply to drones and model aircraft; the competent authority is the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA/ΑΠΑ), and for private use, liability insurance is compulsory from 4 kg. Before every flight, check the zones on the DAGR platform – at airports, archaeological sites and critical infrastructure, you only fly with a permit or not at all.
In Greece, the Ελληνική Μοντελιστική Ένωση (ΕΛ.Μ.Ε.) organises the Greek championship for RC cars – electric and nitro, on- and off-road up to 1:5. Model flying is organised by the model flying commission of the air sports federation ΕΛ.Α.Ο., with 29 member clubs from Crete to Macedonia. Our list includes the Fanatix Racing Track in Stamata near Athens with an asphalt and an artificial grass track, five more tracks from Spata to Lesbos where ΕΛ.Μ.Ε. championship rounds took place in 2026, and four model flying fields – including the field of the Αερολέσχη Λάρισας in Terpsithea, where an F5J World Cup was held in 2026.

Where can you sail model boats in Greece?
We have not yet found a model boat water in Greece with current evidence, either on a club website or from the national federation.
What are the rules in Greece?
These associations are responsible in Greece:
- Ελληνική Μοντελιστική Ένωση (EL.M.E) – Hellenic Modelling Federation: According to its website, ΕΛ.Μ.Ε.’s main aim is to promote modelling, and it organises the Greek national championship (Πανελλήνιο πρωτάθλημα) in various RC car classes, in 2025/2026 including electric and nitro, on-road and off-road up to 1:5 Large Scale. Its drivers represent Greece at EFRA and IFMAR races. Membership requires an annual fee (2026: EUR 30); members are insured only on ΕΛ.Μ.Ε. race days. Drivers resident outside Greece and Cyprus can enter as wildcards.
- Hellenic Aeronautical & Airsports Federation (Ελληνική Αεραθλητική Ομοσπονδία, ΕΛ.Α.Ο.) – Aeromodelling Committee (Επιτροπή Αερομοντελισμού, ΕΠΑΕ): The aeromodelling committee of ΕΛ.Α.Ο. runs a website with information on organised model flying in Greece: competitions and rules, legislation, guidance on founding a club, and a list of 29 member clubs from Crete to Macedonia. According to its insurance page, ΕΛ.Α.Ο. arranges third-party liability insurance for model flights with the insurer ΑΤΛΑΝΤΙΚΗ ΕΝΩΣΗ; the most recent period stated ended on 20 May 2024.
The key points from the law and official pages (retrieved 11/10/2026):
- In Greece, the competent authority for drones and model aircraft is the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (Αρχή Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας, ΑΠΑ/HCAA). According to its organisational decision, it is an independent administrative authority with legal personality, established under Law 4757/2020, with a dedicated unit for general aviation and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). ΑΠΑ also issues remote pilot certificates (Αρχή Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας – Οργανισμός της Αρχής Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας (Α.Π.Α.), ΦΕΚ Β‘ 6692/2023).
- Operators register, not the drones themselves, and only once regardless of how many drones they operate, online in the ΑΠΑ information system (uas.hcaa.gov.gr). The only exemptions are aircraft under 250 g without a camera or other sensor able to detect personal data, and toys under 250 g even with a camera. The operator registration number (prefix GRC plus 13 alphanumeric characters) must be displayed on all drones you own, including home-built ones; after three years the registration can be renewed (Α.Π.Α. – ΣμηΕΑ, Διαδικασίες).
- According to ΑΠΑ, registering as an operator costs a fee (παράβολο) of EUR 20, and issuing a remote pilot certificate also costs EUR 20. An operational authorisation (άδεια πτητικής λειτουργίας) costs EUR 200 ([Α.Π.Α. – Παράβολα ΣμηΕΑ](https://uas.hcaa.gov.gr/Content/Documents/Παράβολα ΣμηΕΑ.pdf)).
- For subcategories A1 and A3, remote pilots complete online training and an online theory exam with 40 multiple-choice questions. The certificate is applied for in the ΑΠΑ system with the training and exam certificates from a UAS training centre (Εκπαιδευτικό Κέντρο ΣμηΕΑ) and the fee. A2 additionally requires practical self-training (declared via gov.gr) and a further theory exam with 30 questions. All remote pilot certificates are valid for five years (Αρχή Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας – Συχνές ερωτήσεις: ΣμηΕΑ – Drones).
- Remote pilots in the open and specific categories must be at least 16 years old. Operators aged 16 to 18 submit a consent declaration from their parents or guardians when registering (Αρχή Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας – Συχνές ερωτήσεις: ΣμηΕΑ – Drones).
- Your maximum flight height is generally 120 m above the surface of the earth; in hilly terrain it is measured from the closest point of the terrain. Over an obstacle taller than 120 m you may fly up to 15 m above it, within 50 m horizontally, but only at the explicit request of its owner (Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority – FAQ Unmanned Aircraft Systems: How high can I fly my drone?).
- According to ΑΠΑ, model aircraft clubs and their unions may register their members collectively in their own name in the operator registration system and, following the procedures common to all, obtain an operational authorisation (εξουσιοδότηση πτητικής λειτουργίας) from ΑΠΑ. Model flyers who register on their own may operate only in subcategory A3 (Αρχή Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας – Πετάω αερομοντέλα. Πρέπει να εγγραφώ στο πληροφοριακό σύστημα;).
- Under Greek law, third-party liability insurance is required for every drone used for professional purposes and, for private use, from 4 kg take-off mass. The policy covering all your drones is submitted with the operator registration (Αρχή Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας – Χρειάζομαι ασφάλιση όταν πετάω ένα drone;).
- You may register in only one EU state. Operator registration numbers are recognised in all Member States, and remote pilot certificates are valid in all EASA Member States. Residents of non-EU countries register in the first EU country where they intend to fly; in Greece, applicants without a Greek tax number (ΑΦΜ) use a separate ΑΠΑ online form. Training and qualifications from third countries are not recognised (Αρχή Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας – Συχνές ερωτήσεις: ΣμηΕΑ – Drones).
- Before any drone flight in Greece you must check airspace restrictions on the DAGR platform (Drone Aware Greece, https://dagr.hasp.gov.gr/). In yellow and magenta zones, e.g. airports and archaeological sites, flights may be permitted only under specific conditions or prohibited entirely, and prior approval is usually required (Drone Flight Notification Form at least 5 working days before the flight). Outside these zones, flights are allowed without special approval under the EASA open category rules (Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority – Where you are allowed to fly a UAS in Greece).
- According to ΑΠΑ’s safety bulletin of 22 December 2025, UAS flights are not permitted in airport areas and in zones of critical infrastructure, such as energy and telecommunications facilities, ports, military installations and government buildings. Flights in airport areas require a flight permit requested by email and reviewed by ΑΠΑ. Flying without the required authorisation is a breach of the law and can lead to administrative fines, criminal penalties and confiscation of equipment (Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority – Safety Bulletin – Responsible Use of UAS and Information on Flights near Airports).
- Using drones in areas affected by wildfire is prohibited unless authorisation and coordination with the competent authorities have been obtained beforehand. Uncontrolled flights can obstruct aerial firefighting operations (ΑΠΑ warning of 14 August 2025)

Missing an entry?
Our list for Greece still has gaps: most tracks and clubs share information only on Facebook, so five tracks and three airfields are based on dates from the federations ΕΛ.Μ.Ε. and ΕΛ.Α.Ο. – which usually do not state guest rules or prices. We have not yet found a water for model boats; the Panhellenic meeting of ship modellers in Argostoli (Kefalonia) has so far only been documented in the press. Do you know an active club with its own website that is missing here? Write to us via the contact page (in German) – we check the tip on the club’s website and add it to the list.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive on an RC track in Greece as a guest?
At the Fanatix Racing Track in Stamata, yes: according to its somewhat older track page, it is open on Saturdays from 11:00 and on Sundays on race days from 9:00; you pay a flat rate of €25 per person for all tracks, and new visitors may drive for one or two battery packs free of charge. The other tracks do not state any guest rules – ask the club before a visit.
Where are the rounds of the Greek RC car championship held?
In 2026, among other places, in Spata (1:10 electric on-road), in Vatolakkos near Chania on Crete, in Amaliada and in Mytilene on Lesbos (each 1:8 buggy off-road) and in Stamata; the calendar is published by the ΕΛ.Μ.Ε. Drivers resident outside Greece and Cyprus can enter as a wildcard.
Do I need to register in Greece?
Not if you are already registered in another EU country: you only register in one EU state, and operator numbers and remote pilot certificates are recognised in all member states. If you live outside the EU, you register in the first EU country in which you fly.
Do I need insurance in Greece?
For private use, you need third-party liability insurance from a take-off mass of 4 kg, and for professional use always. Liability insurance is also compulsory for ΕΛ.Α.Ο. competitions.
Where am I not allowed to fly in Greece?
Before every flight, check the DAGR platform (Drone Aware Greece). In yellow and magenta zones – for example at airports and archaeological sites – you only fly under conditions or not at all; according to the ΑΠΑ, airport areas and critical infrastructure are off-limits, and drones are prohibited over wildfire areas without a permit.
