Boat waters 6
Status October 2026
In short
In Sweden we have checked 7 RC tracks, 10 model airfields and 6 waters for model boats one by one on the clubs‘ own websites. A guest day ticket costs SEK 150 to 200 at the clubs that state a price. EU rules apply to drones and model aircraft, and your registration from your country of residence is also valid in Sweden. Since 2026, flying from 250 g without a certificate of competency has been a punishable offence (in Sweden the Drönarkort; certificates from EU states are valid); liability insurance is not required for recreational flights under 20 kg.
In Sweden, model flying is organised by two federations, Sveriges Modellflygförbund (SMFF) and Svenska RC-flygförbundet (RCFF). Since July 2026 both have held an Art. 16 authorisation from the aviation authority Transportstyrelsen: at the approved club fields, members fly according to common safety rules and do not need a Drönarkort there. Several tracks on our list have regional championships, Sverigecup rounds or the Nordic Championship on their 2026 calendar. Among model boats, radio sailing is particularly strong, often in sailing clubs with their own RC section and mostly in the DF65 class.

These associations are responsible in Sweden:
- Svenska RC-flygförbundet (RCFF): By its own account, Svenska RC-flygförbundet is a non-profit organisation that works to make model flying visible in the media, the press and locally; since 2018 it has handled organised model flying’s contacts with Transportstyrelsen through the field register (Fältregistret), on the basis of which model flying fields are approved under Article 16. Personal membership costs SEK 100 a year and includes liability insurance with IF, valid worldwide, as well as accident insurance; as a member you do not need a drone licence at fields approved by Transportstyrelsen.
The key points from the law and official pages (retrieved 11/10/2026):
- The authority responsible for drones and model aircraft is Transportstyrelsen: if your model weighs at least 250 g or carries a camera, sound recorder or other sensor (toys are exempt), you register as an operator via its e-service Drönarsidan using an e-ID and mark your operator ID correctly, visibly and legibly on the drone. As a private individual you can only register online if you are at least 18 and registered as a resident in Sweden (folkbokförd) (Transportstyrelsen – Registrering av operatör).
- Transportstyrelsen charges an application fee of SEK 190 (2026) for registering as an operator, followed by an annual register fee of SEK 250 (Transportstyrelsen – Registration of UAS operator).
- The proof of competence for the open category is Transportstyrelsen’s drone licence (drönarkort): the A1/A3 exam (40 multiple-choice questions, at least 75 % correct) is taken entirely online, while the A2 exam (30 questions) must now be taken under supervision at an authorised drone school (ADS). The digital drone licence is valid for five years, and the minimum age for flying on your own is 15 (Transportstyrelsen – Utbildning för fjärrpiloter).
- Transportstyrelsen charges SEK 600 for the online A1/A3 exam and certificate and SEK 850 for the A2 exam and certificate of competency (SEK 600 if you have already paid for A1/A3); a resit costs SEK 600 and renewal SEK 550 (Transportstyrelsen – Teoriprov och kompetensbevis (avgifter)).
- Since 1 January 2026 it has been a criminal offence in Sweden to fly a drone weighing 250 g or more without a drone licence. The penalty can be 30 to 150 day-fines, depending on the seriousness of the offence, and in the most serious cases up to six months‘ imprisonment (Transportstyrelsen – Nu skärps reglerna för drönare).
- In the open category, the unmanned aircraft must be kept within 120 m of the closest point of the surface of the earth during flight; the only exception is when overflying an obstacle (Article 4(1)(e) of Regulation (EU) 2019/947) (EUR-Lex – Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947, Article 4).
- In Sweden, insurance is not required if you, as operator, only use drones under 20 kg for leisure, display or recreational purposes. All other drone operations are subject to the insurance requirements of Regulation (EC) No 785/2004 (Transportstyrelsen – Guide to UAS operations in Sweden).
- By decision of 2 July 2026 (TSL 2025-8273), Transportstyrelsen has approved under Article 16 of Regulation (EU) 2019/947 that RCFF and SMFF operations at the model flying fields listed in the annex follow the joint ‘Säkerhetsregler för modellflyg utomhus’ (version 1.4.2) and local field rules instead of the authority’s regulations. Flying there is only allowed within visual line of sight, an observer (caller) must always assist when flying above 120 m above ground, and no flying takes place while a temporary restricted area over the field is active, unless stated otherwise (Transportstyrelsen – Beslut TSL 2025-8273 (förändrat godkännande för modellflygklubb)).
- According to RCFF, members of RCFF or SMFF do not need a drone licence at model flying fields approved by Transportstyrelsen, but they do outside those fields. Operator registration and the operator ID on the model, however, are required at the approved fields too (RCFF – Regelöversikt och aktuella säkerhetsregler).
- If you live in another EU/EASA state, you register as an operator there, not in Sweden. An operator ID and drone licence registered in another EU/EASA member state – expressly including Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland – are also valid in Sweden (Transportstyrelsen – Registration of UAS operator).
- LFV’s drone map Drönarkartan (https://dronechart.lfv.se/), referred to by Transportstyrelsen, is a map made specifically for remote pilots that helps you work out where you can fly without disturbing regular air traffic (Transportstyrelsen – Drönarflygguiden).
- If you want to share, publish or sell photos or films taken from the air, for example with your drone, you generally need a dissemination permit (spridningstillstånd) from Lantmäteriet; applying is free of charge, and distributing such material without a permit may be a criminal offence. Lantmäteriet lists exceptions where no application is needed (Lantmäteriet – Dissemination Permit).

Missing an entry?
Our list for Sweden is still incomplete: for 15 of the 21 counties we have not yet found an RC track, for 13 a model flying field, and so far we only list waters in Stockholm, Skåne, Halland and Västra Götaland. Several federation and club websites blocked access. Do you know an active club that is missing here? Write to us via the contact page (in German) – we check the tip on the club’s website and add it to the list.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find an RC track in Sweden?
This page lists 7 verified tracks in 6 counties, with surface, classes and guest driver rules. Where clubs state a price, a driving day for guests costs SEK 150 to SEK 200; payment is often via Swish.
Can I fly at a Swedish club field as a visiting model pilot from abroad?
Often yes, as the guest of a member or with a guest membership. The clubs on our list usually require membership of RCFF, SMFF or an equivalent foreign federation, and thus liability insurance; depending on the club, a guest membership costs SEK 200 to SEK 550. Before your first flight, get in touch with the club.
Do I need to register again in Sweden?
No. If you live in another EU or EASA state, you register there and not in Sweden; according to Transportstyrelsen, your operator number and your certificate of competency are also valid in Sweden. You attach your operator number to every model.
How high can I fly in Sweden?
In the open category no higher than 120 m above ground. At RCFF and SMFF fields approved under Art. 16, their safety rules apply; above 120 m an observer must always assist there. The Drönarkartan from LFV shows where you can fly.
Do I need insurance in Sweden?
Sweden does not require liability insurance for recreational flights with drones and models under 20 kg. However, clubs usually require guests to have insurance through RCFF, SMFF or a foreign federation; according to the federation, the personal RCFF membership (SEK 100 a year) includes liability insurance valid worldwide.
