In short

In Switzerland we have checked 18 RC tracks, 22 model airfields and 8 waters for model boats one by one on the clubs‘ own websites. A guest day ticket costs CHF 10 to 33 at the clubs that state a price. Drones have been subject to the EU rules since 2023, while model flying in clubs follows simplified Swiss rules; from 250 g, liability insurance of at least CHF 1 million is mandatory.

The umbrella association of Swiss RC car clubs is the SRCCA, founded in 1976, with more than 30 clubs in Switzerland and Liechtenstein; model pilots are organised in the Swiss Aeromodelling Federation (SMV/FSAM) with around 180 clubs, ship modellers in the SSMV. Switzerland has its own simplified rules for model flying if you are a member of a model flying club or commit to the SMV guidelines by declaration. According to its operator, the largest permanent indoor RC track in Switzerland is in Islikon, Thurgau.

What are the rules in Switzerland?

These associations are responsible in Switzerland:

  • SRCCA – Swiss R/C Car Clubs Association: SRCCA (Swiss R/C Car Clubs Association), founded in 1976, links the RC car clubs throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein – more than 30 clubs according to the association. Its website lists the race calendar and race entries.
  • Swiss Aeromodelling Federation (SMV/FSAM): The Swiss Aeromodelling Federation (SMV) is a section of the Aero-Club of Switzerland and, with more than 8,000 members in 180 clubs, represents model pilots and clubs towards the authorities. Under Swiss law it is an association approved under Article 16 of EU Regulation 2019/947 – non-members can sign a declaration committing to the SMV ‚Code of Good Practice‘ and also fly under the simplified model aircraft rules.
  • SSMV – Swiss ship model association: According to its own description, SSMV (Schweizer Schiff-Modell-Verband) is the official umbrella association for model shipbuilding in Switzerland. It supports the clubs, organises demonstration runs and competitions and connects model builders across the country.

The key points from the law and official pages (retrieved 10/10/2026):

  • Since 1 January 2023, unmanned aircraft in Switzerland have been governed primarily by the EU drone rules – Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945 and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 – supplemented by the DETEC Ordinance on Special Category Aircraft (OSCA). The competent authority is the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) (DETEC Ordinance on Special Category Aircraft (OSCA), SR 748.941 – unofficial translation).
  • Anyone operating a drone in Switzerland must register as an operator with FOCA (dLIS platform, fee CHF 10, minimum age 12). The only exemption is for drones under 250 g without a camera, microphone or other sensors recording personal data; your UAS operator number must be affixed clearly visibly to the drone (FOCA – Registration as a drone operator).
  • If you live in an EU country (e.g. Germany), Norway or Iceland, you register as a drone operator in your country of residence, not in Switzerland. Anyone living outside these countries who is not registered there must register in Switzerland – tourists included (FOCA – Frequently asked questions on drones (FAQ)).
  • In the open category, the minimum age for flying a drone is 12. Younger children may only fly under the direct supervision of a suitably qualified person aged at least 16 (FOCA – Frequently asked questions on drones (FAQ)).
  • For drone flights in subcategories A1 and A3 you need the A1/A3 remote pilot certificate: FOCA’s theory exam is taken online from home (60 minutes, CHF 20), and the certificate is valid for 5 years in all EASA member states. Only class C0 drones and legacy or privately built drones under 250 g in A1 may be flown without it – although FOCA recommends it for them too (FOCA – Training and certificates for remote pilots).
  • Remote pilot certificates from an EASA member state – such as a German A1/A3 certificate – are valid in Switzerland and do not need to be uploaded to dLIS. Certificates issued by countries that are not EASA members are not recognised in Switzerland (FOCA – Training and certificates for remote pilots).
  • In the open category, drones may be flown at a maximum of 120 m above ground level and only within visual line of sight. Flying over assemblies of people is prohibited (FOCA – Flight rules for drones).
  • Drones and model aircraft weighing more than 250 g must be covered by third-party liability insurance with a guaranteed sum of at least CHF 1 million. You must carry proof of insurance when flying (DETEC Ordinance on Special Category Aircraft (OSCA), SR 748.941, Art. 35 – unofficial translation).
  • Model flying within model aircraft clubs is subject to separate, simplified Swiss rules (Section 4 of the OSCA); Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 does not apply to it, except for its Article 16. The SMV is an association approved under Article 16(2)(a), and these rules apply to you if you are a member of an approved model aircraft club or sign a declaration committing to comply with the SMV’s publicly available guidelines (DETEC Ordinance on Special Category Aircraft (OSCA), SR 748.941, Art. 30 – unofficial translation).
  • If you fly your model neither as a member of a model aircraft club nor under a declaration to comply with the SMV guidelines, FOCA states that the more restrictive and complex drone rules apply (FOCA – Model aircraft).
  • When flying models under the SMV rules, you must keep direct visual contact with the model and be able to control it at all times; the minimum age for flying unsupervised is 5. Models over 250 g are prohibited within 5 km of the runways of civil or military aerodromes, above 150 m above ground in an active control zone (CTR), and within 100 m of outdoor gatherings of people (except at public flying events) (DETEC Ordinance on Special Category Aircraft (OSCA), SR 748.941, Art. 31 – unofficial translation).
  • Model aircraft weighing more than 30 kg may only be operated with a FOCA permit. FOCA sets the approval requirements and operating conditions on a case-by-case basis (FOCA – Model aircraft).
  • For command and control of drones and model aircraft, OFCOM lists among others the bands 34.995–35.225 MHz, 2400–2483.5 MHz and 5170–5250 / 5725–5875 MHz; no licence, prior notification or certificate of proficiency is required for this use. The equipment must meet the legal requirements for spectrum and device conformity (OFCOM – Drones and model aircraft).

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find an RC track in Switzerland?

This page lists 18 verified tracks in 9 cantons, each with surface, classes and guest rules. The umbrella association is the SRCCA; several of the tracks host rounds of the Swiss championship in 2026.

Do I have to register my model aircraft in Switzerland?

For drones, FOCA says: if you live in Germany or another EU country, you register in your country of residence, not in Switzerland. If you fly your model as a member of a model flying club or with a declaration to follow the SMV guidelines, the simplified Swiss rules for model flying apply.

Is my A1/A3 certificate from another EU country valid in Switzerland?

Yes. According to FOCA, remote pilot certificates from EASA member states are valid in Switzerland and do not need to be uploaded.

Can I fly at a Swiss model airfield while on holiday?

At many clubs yes, almost always only by invitation or accompanied by a member and with proof of liability insurance; some fields are open to members only. The rules are in the profiles; only a few clubs state a guest fee (CHF 20).

Do I need insurance for my model aircraft in Switzerland?

From 250 g yes. The Ordinance on Special Category Aircraft requires liability insurance with cover of at least CHF 1 million; carry the proof with you when flying.
