In short

In Spain we have checked 8 RC tracks, 14 model airfields and 4 waters for model boats one by one on the clubs‘ own websites. A guest day ticket costs €15 at the clubs that state a price. EU rules apply to drones and model aircraft, and your registration from your country of residence is also valid in Spain. Spanish law requires liability insurance for A2, the specific category and from 20 kg, but not for A1 and A3 under 20 kg; before flying, you check the geographical zones in the ENAIRE Drones app.

In Spain, RC car racing is run under the umbrella of AECAR, the Spanish member of EFRA, which also issues the driver licence. Many tracks let guests drive with a day ticket, others only members. Model flying is overseen by the Real Federación Aeronáutica Española (RFAE) with its specialist commission for model flying; club fields often require guests to hold a federation licence (licencia federativa). The Spanish aviation safety agency (AESA) is responsible for drones and model aircraft, and in addition to the EU rules the Spanish Real Decreto 517/2024 applies.

What are the rules in Spain?

These associations are responsible in Spain:

  • Asociación Española de Coches a Radiocontrol (AECAR): According to EFRA, the European federation for radio-controlled model cars, AECAR is its member federation for Spain. It issues the driver licence (the 2026 licence is valid for the rest of 2025 and the whole 2026 season), publishes the 2026 race calendar and covers classes from 1:8, 1:10 and 1:5 off-road to on-road (nitro and electric), motorcycles, Gran Escala and GT, crawler and rally; clubs can join free of charge.
  • Real Federación Aeronáutica Española (RFAE): At RFAE each air sport discipline is managed by a national technical commission; the Comisión Técnica Nacional de Aeromodelismo (CTNA) regulates model flying, organises the Spanish championships (Campeonatos de España) and selects athletes for the national teams. The website refers to the FAI, the Spanish Olympic Committee COE and the sports council CSD and provides information on the FAI F3F World Championship for Model Gliders from 23 to 29 August 2026.

The key points from the law and official pages (retrieved 10/10/2026):

  • In Spain, the competent authority for drones and model aircraft is the State Aviation Safety Agency AESA (Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea): you register with it, clubs apply to it for their authorisation and its drone mailbox answers questions. Model aircraft are subject to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 – except for flights inside buildings or completely enclosed spaces – and Spain’s Royal Decree 517/2024 also applies to model flying (AESA – Aeromodelling).
  • In the open category you must register as an operator if your aircraft has an MTOM of 250 g or more, can transfer a kinetic energy of more than 80 joules to a person on impact, or carries a sensor able to capture personal data (e.g. a camera) – toys under Directive 2009/48/EC excepted; in the specific category registration is required for any mass. Registration is free of charge via AESA’s website (electronic office), and you must include your operator number on all your drones; the certificate is valid for 3 years (those issued before 25 June 2024 until 25 June 2027), and each amendment of the registration extends it by another 3 years (AESA – Drone Operator Registration/UAS).
  • You can obtain the A1/A3 certificate only through AESA’s online training and online exam: 40 questions in 40 minutes, passed with at least 75 % correct answers; registration, training and exam are completely free of charge, the certificate is valid for 5 years and you must start the renewal before it expires. For A2 you declare, when registering for the exam, that you have completed practical self-training, and take an additional exam with 30 questions in 30 minutes (AESA – Training of UAS/drones pilots in the ‚open‘ category).
  • In the open category you fly no higher than 120 m above the closest point of the earth’s surface, keep the aircraft within visual line of sight (VLOS) at all times, do not fly over concentrations of people, drop nothing and carry no dangerous goods. In A2 you keep at least 30 m from uninvolved persons, in A3 at least 150 m from residential, commercial, industrial or recreational areas; the minimum age for remote pilots is generally 16, with exceptions (AESA – UAS/drone operations: ‚open‘ category, subcategories A1, A2 and A3).
  • Insurance is governed by Article 8 of Royal Decree 517/2024: from 20 kg MTOM you must be insured under Regulation (EC) No 785/2004 (at least 750,000 SDR for third-party damage on the ground, for drones up to 500 kg); below that, Royal Decree 37/2001 applies with a minimum of 220,000 SDR. Only flights in open subcategory A1 and in A3 with less than 20 kg are exempt; the insurance must cover each flight, but a permanent policy is not required (AESA – UAS/drones regulations).
  • In Spain, model flying is possible in three ways: in open subcategory A3, in particular UAS geographical zones for model flying, or under an AESA authorisation for clubs under Article 16 of Regulation (EU) 2019/947. In A3 you fly with a maximum take-off mass below 25 kg, no higher than 120 m (400 ft), at least 150 m away from residential, commercial, industrial or recreational areas and with the A1/A3 training and exam passed (AESA – Aeromodelling).
  • The Interministerial Commission has defined particular UAS geographical zones at all model airfields published in the AIP: if you fly there in A3, the minimum age and remote pilot training requirements are waived as long as alternative measures are met. These include specific training material, explanation of the internal rules, instruction and ongoing supervision by experienced pilots, a gradual introduction for beginners and under-16s, kinetic energy below 34 kJ and a ground-risk buffer of at least 120 m (AESA – Aeromodelling).
  • If you want to fly beyond A3 – for example above 120 m, with more than 25 kg, with an aircraft that is not privately built and has a combustion engine, over concentrations of people or beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) – your club, association or federation needs an operational authorisation from AESA under Article 16 of Regulation (EU) 2019/947. To obtain it, the organisation must be legally constituted, insure all UAS operations of its members and submit an operations manual; the authorisation is limited to Spanish territory (AESA – Aeromodelling).
  • As a model flyer you register free of charge via AESA’s website (electronic office) – yourself or by giving your club or association permission to register you on your behalf. The minimum age to register as a UAS operator is 16 (AESA – Aeromodelling).
  • Depending on the location, additional requirements may apply to your flight or it may be limited or prohibited – for example in controlled airspace, around aerodromes and heliports, in urban environments and in prohibited and restricted areas; the conditions of the UAS geographical zones are set out in Royal Decree 517/2024. The ENAIRE Drones app (drones.enaire.es) shows where drone flights are prohibited or restricted; you may only fly if you are registered and have an operator number (AESA – Geographical areas of UAS).
  • You are registered in the state where you reside or where your business has its principal place of business, and you may not be registered in more than one Member State at a time. If you come from a country outside EASA, you register in the first Member State in which you intend to fly – if that is Spain, under the same procedures as Spanish operators; pilot certificates issued by one Member State are valid in all EASA Member States, including Spain (AESA – How to fly a UAS in Spain).

Missing an entry?

For the Basque Country, La Rioja, Castilla–La Mancha, Extremadura, Murcia and the Canary Islands we have not yet found a club with current evidence on its own website. Many Spanish clubs only appear on Facebook, and numerous club websites could not be accessed. Do you know an active club that is missing here? Write to us via the contact page (in German) – we check the tip on the club’s website and add it to the list.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find an RC track in Spain?

This page lists 8 verified tracks in 7 regions, with surface, classes and guest driver rules. Where clubs state a price, a guest day costs €15; some clubs require an AECAR licence for club races.

Can I fly at a Spanish club field as a model pilot from abroad?

Often yes, by arrangement with the club. The clubs on our list usually require guests to hold a valid federation licence (licencia federativa), some also a UAS operator number and liability insurance. It is best to check with the club beforehand whether your membership card from home is sufficient.

Do I need to register again in Spain?

No. You are registered in your country of residence, and you may not be registered in several EU states at the same time; certificates of competency from EASA states are also valid in Spain. You attach your operator number to the model.

How high can I fly in Spain?

In the open category no higher than 120 m above ground and only with visual contact. You may only fly higher, with more than 25 kg or beyond visual line of sight in a club authorised by AESA under Art. 16.

Is insurance compulsory in Spain?

Yes for flights in A2, in the specific category and with a take-off mass of 20 kg or more. For A1 and for A3 under 20 kg, the Real Decreto 517/2024 does not require insurance; many clubs nevertheless require guests to hold a federation licence.
