In short

In France we have checked 19 RC tracks, 27 model airfields and 9 waters for model boats one by one on the clubs‘ own websites. A guest day ticket costs €10 to €15 at the clubs that state a price. EU rules apply to drones; liability insurance is not compulsory in the open category. Even as a guest from abroad, you must register models over 800 g on AlphaTango and fit them with a French electronic signalling device.

The umbrella organisation for RC car clubs is the FFVRC, with 15 regional leagues and around 300 clubs; its licence includes accident insurance. Model flying is organised by the FFAM. France has its own rules for model flying clubs: since 2023 FFAM clubs have flown under their federation’s Article 16 authorisation, and their fields are listed in the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP). A French peculiarity is the electronic signalling device required for models over 800 g – club members are exempt from it at exempted fields.

What are the rules in France?

These associations are responsible in France:

  • Fédération Française de Voitures Radio-Commandées (FFVRC): FFVRC, approved by the Ministry of Sports, organises and develops radio-controlled car and motorcycle racing in all its forms, from leisure driving to competition – on-road and off-road, in scales from 1:5 to 1:24, with nitro or electric power. It has 15 regional leagues, around 300 clubs and 8,299 licence holders (2025); the licence includes accident insurance for bodily injury.
  • Fédération Française d’Aéromodélisme (FFAM): FFAM, founded on 16 January 1966 as a non-profit association, exercises the sporting powers for model aviation by delegation and approval of the Ministry of Sports – covering free flight, control line, RC gliders, RC powered aircraft and space models. It issues licences and passports (including for pilots living abroad) and explains the rules on its website, with an English guide for guest pilots.

The key points from the law and official pages (retrieved 10/10/2026):

  • The competent authority is the civil aviation authority DGAC; its safety directorate (DSAC) runs the online portal AlphaTango. Since 31 December 2020 you register there free of charge as a UAS operator and display the number on your drone – the only exemption is for open-category drones under 250 g with an impact energy below 80 joules and without a camera or other sensor able to capture personal data (for toys under the EU Toy Safety Directive the sensor does not count). In addition, aircraft of 800 g or more have had to be registered on AlphaTango since 26 December 2018 (Ministère de la Transition écologique – AlphaTango).
  • For drones in classes C1 to C4 you complete the online training course ‚Catégorie ouverte A1/A3‘ and pass a test of 40 questions (at least 75 % correct answers). The certificate is valid for 5 years (Service-Public.gouv.fr – Drone: Pilotage rules to be respected (automatically translated)).
  • Training and the exam for A1/A3 are free of charge and available online, and all EU Member States recognise the certificate – conversely, A1/A3 certificates and A2 remote pilot certificates from other EU countries are recognised in France. As an operator from another EU country you are registered there; however, drones over 800 g must additionally be registered on AlphaTango and fitted with a French electronic signalling device in France (Ministère de la Transition écologique – Exploitation de drones en catégorie Ouverte).
  • As a rule you must be at least 14 years old to fly a drone, and the maximum flight height is 120 m. Flying at night is prohibited, even with lights – exceptions apply only at certain sites of model aircraft associations (Service-Public.gouv.fr – Drone: Pilotage rules to be respected (automatically translated)).
  • A French peculiarity: all drones and model aircraft over 800 g need an electronic signalling device (signalement électronique). This requirement applies only in France and in addition to EU direct remote identification, which in the open category concerns only class-marked drones; existing add-on devices remain usable in France (FAQ Transition européenne UAS (DGAC, version juillet 2026)).
  • In the open category, liability insurance is not mandatory. However, the DGAC advises you to check whether your personal liability cover (for example under your home insurance) includes damage caused by the drone; you can enter your insurance when registering on AlphaTango (FAQ Transition européenne UAS (DGAC, version juillet 2026)).
  • If your drone weighs more than 250 g, the A1/A3 online training is mandatory. According to the DGAC, the former leisure training Fox AlphaTango (2019) is no longer valid; with an A1/A3 certificate, however, you do not need to repeat the training in another EU country (FAQ Transition européenne UAS (DGAC, version juillet 2026)).
  • France uses Article 16 of Regulation (EU) 2019/947 for national rules for model aircraft clubs (order of 3 December 2020, amended on 26 December 2022). Since 1 January 2023 a model aircraft club needs an ‚Article 16‘ operational authorisation from the DSAC: clubs belonging to FFAM or another federation approved by the Ministry of Sports benefit from their federation’s authorisation, while non-affiliated clubs apply for their own. You still register individually as an operator (Guide DSAC – Associations d’aéromodélisme (version 2.0, 02.03.2023)).
  • Within a club, pilots over 14 flying models of 800 g or more need a training certificate valid for 5 years. Without a certificate – for example as a guest – you may fly such models only on introductory flights in a club of FFAM or an approved federation, at a published model flying site and under the supervision of a trained person aged at least 16. For international competitions (up to 30 days), the minister responsible for civil aviation may also authorise foreign pilots without this certificate (Guide DSAC – Associations d’aéromodélisme (version 2.0, 02.03.2023), § 4.2).
  • Club model flying sites are published in the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP); there, the height set for the site applies, and club members flying within visual line of sight are exempt from the electronic signalling device at sites designated for this exemption. Outside these sites the limit is 120 m, or up to 150 m with altitude telemetry, an observer and a training certificate (Guide DSAC – Associations d’aéromodélisme (version 2.0, 02.03.2023)).
  • If you live abroad for at least 6 months a year, an FFAM club can issue you the ‚passeport résident à l’étranger‘: it is valid for one year, renewable annually, includes third-party liability insurance and allows occasional flying, for example on holiday or at a club event listed in the FFAM calendar – but not competitions or tests for wings and brevets. The club checks that you are a member of a recognised organisation (FFAM – Les passeports).
  • Where you may fly is shown on the interactive map of drone restrictions from 0 to 120 m, produced by the DGAC with the IGN – available on Géoportail (geoportail.gouv.fr) (Ministère de la Transition écologique – Exploitation de drones en catégorie Ouverte).

Missing an entry?

For Corsica we have not yet found a club with its own website and current evidence, and for Brittany, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitania no club water yet. The FFVRC alone counts around 300 clubs – this list is a verified selection per region, not a complete directory, and many club websites could not be accessed. Do you know an active club that is missing here? Write to us via the contact page (in German) – we check the tip on the club’s website and add it to the list.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find an RC track in France?

This page lists 19 verified tracks in 12 regions, with surface, classes and guest driver rules. Many clubs require members to hold an FFVRC licence, which includes accident insurance.

Can I fly at a French club field as a model pilot from abroad?

Yes. If you live abroad for at least 6 months a year, an FFAM club can issue you the “passeport résident à l’étranger”: it is valid for one year, includes liability insurance and allows occasional flying, for example on holiday. For models over 800 g, the French rules on AlphaTango registration and the electronic signalling device also apply.

Do I need to register again in France?

Not as an operator: you are registered in your EU country of residence, and your A1/A3 certificate is also valid in France. However, you must additionally register drones and models over 800 g on AlphaTango.

How high can I fly in France?

In the open category no higher than 120 m, and not at all at night. At model airfields published in the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), the altitude set for the field applies.

Is insurance compulsory in France?

Not in the open category. However, the DGAC advises checking whether your personal liability insurance covers damage caused by the drone. The FFAM passeport for pilots resident abroad includes liability insurance.
