RC tracks 6
Model airfields 8
Boat waters 3
Status October 2026
In short
In Finland we have checked 6 RC tracks, 8 model airfields and 3 waters for model boats one by one on the clubs‘ own websites. A guest day ticket costs €15 to €20 at the clubs that state a price. EU rules apply to drones and model aircraft; if you are already registered in your country of residence, you do not need to register additionally in Finland. Under EU law, liability insurance is only compulsory from 20 kg, but the authority Traficom also recommends it for lighter models, and the clubs on our list usually require pilots to have it.
In Finland, RC car racing is overseen by AKK-Motorsport in its Pienoisautoilu division, which also organises the Finnish Championships (SM). Our list includes dedicated RC clubs and RC sections of local motorsport clubs (Urheiluautoilijat); several of them drive indoors in winter. Model flying is represented by Suomen Ilmailuliitto (SIL): its clubs fly at fields with their own UAS zones, where less strict rules apply than in the open category; with the federation authorisation SIL 16, members may fly up to 300 m high in suitable terrain after an online course and a practical test. Among model boats, radio sailing with DF65 boats is particularly active.

What are the rules in Finland?
These associations are responsible in Finland:
- AKK-Motorsport ry (Pienoisautoilu – model car racing): AKK-Motorsport is listed with EFRA as the federation for Finland; RC cars race in its Pienoisautoilu discipline (model car racing, together with slot cars) as speed races on closed tracks – in Finland mostly in 1:12, 1:10, 1:8 and 1:5, electric or combustion, on indoor carpet, asphalt or off-road. The 2026 rulebook largely follows EFRA/IFMAR rules on technical matters, and Finnish championships (SM) are held in the classes that also run European and World Championships.
- Suomen Ilmailuliitto ry (SIL): According to its website, SIL is Finland’s national umbrella organisation for sport and recreational aviation, whose main task is representing its members‘ interests; model flying is handled by its Unmanned Aviation Committee through the website lennokkimaarays.fi. Member clubs can obtain ‘permissive’ UAS zones for their flying sites through the association at no cost, membership includes insurance cover for the hobby, and under the association’s ‘SIL 16’ authorisation members can fly with more freedom than in the open category after an online course and a practical test at a club.
The key points from the law and official pages (retrieved 11/10/2026):
- In Finland, drones and model aircraft are the responsibility of Traficom, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency: if your aircraft weighs 250 g or more or carries a camera, you register as an operator in its e-service and attach your operator registration number (format FIN123456789012x) to the side of the aircraft. Below 250 g without a camera or other sensor, and for toys, no registration is needed (Traficom – Registration and theoretical examination).
- Registering as an operator in Traficom’s e-service costs €40 for 1 year, €95 for 3 years or €125 for 5 years. The register sends you a reminder two weeks before your registration expires (Traficom – Registration and theoretical examination).
- For subcategories A1 and A3 you take an online theory exam with Traficom; it costs €35 and is free for private persons at their first registration. The certificate is valid for five years, and your remote pilot ID (FIN-RP-…) is not the same as your operator registration number (Traficom – Rekisteröityminen ja teoriakoe).
- In the open category you may fly no higher than 120 m above ground or water. The operator must be an adult (18); in Finland you may act as remote pilot from the age of 12 (Traficom – Operations in the ‘open’ category).
- On request, Traficom can grant a model aircraft club or association an authorisation under Article 16 of Regulation (EU) 2019/947; the conditions are set out in that article. If you fly under such an authorisation, adequate liability insurance is mandatory – below 20 kg under the Finnish Aviation Act (864/2014), from 20 kg under the EU insurance regulation (Traficom – Lennokkikerhoissa harrastavat).
- For club flying there are also ‘permissive’ UAS geographical zones where rules more relaxed than those of the open category apply, for example on flight altitude. As a club pilot, however, you register under the same rules as every other drone user (Traficom – Avoin kategoria).
- Under EU law (Regulation (EC) No 785/2004), every drone over 20 kg must be covered by liability insurance. For most aircraft in the open category insurance is not mandatory, but Traficom recommends liability insurance for lighter aircraft too (Traficom – How to be safe in case of accident – Insurance).
- Since 31 December 2020, restrictive UAS geographical zones have replaced the safety distances of the former national regulation OPS M1-32 around airports, aerodromes and heliports. Temporary airspace restrictions are officially published as AIP Supplements by the Aeronautical Information Service; in addition, you can see them and the UAS zones on the Flyk website or Fintraffic Sky (Traficom – Where is flying prohibited?).
- If you are an EU citizen, Traficom’s registration page refers you to the website of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). If you are not an EU citizen, you can register as an operator in Traficom’s e-service using the strong authentication ‘Finnish Authenticator’, which can be requested since 8 January 2026 (Traficom – Registration and theoretical examination).
- Under Article 14(6) of Regulation (EU) 2019/947 you register as an operator in the EU Member State where you live, and you can never be registered in more than one Member State at a time. So if you are already registered in your country of residence (e.g. Germany), you do not register again in Finland (EUR-Lex – Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947).
- According to Suomen Ilmailuliitto (SIL), the authority has granted the association a nationwide authorisation in the specific category (‘SIL 16’), which clubs can join: under it, members may fly up to 300 m in a suitable area, fly FPV at low altitude without a separate airspace observer and also use self-built aircraft without a C class mark. Qualification starts with an online course and ends with a practical test at a club (Suomen Ilmailuliitto (lennokkimaarays.fi) – SIL 16 lupa).
- Since 1 January 2023, model flying in Finland has also been subject to the EU drone rules: the national model aircraft regulation OPS M1-32 expired, and the height limit dropped from 150 m to 120 m except in permissive UAS zones. Such zones were set up at model flying sites at the request of Suomen Ilmailuliitto (SIL); they and their conditions are listed in Annex 3 of Traficom regulation OPS M1-29 (Traficom – Lennokkitoiminta siirtyy EU-sääntelyn alaisuuteen 1.1.2023 alkaen).

Missing an entry?
Our list for Finland is still incomplete: for 15 of the 19 regions we have not yet found an RC track, for 12 a model flying field, and so far we only list waters in Uusimaa, Kymenlaakso and Ostrobothnia. Many Finnish clubs only publish current dates on Facebook, and several club websites blocked access. Do you know an active club that is missing here? Write to us via the contact page (in German) – we check the tip on the club’s website and add it to the list.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find an RC track in Finland?
This page lists 6 verified tracks in 4 regions, with surface, classes and guest driver rules. Where clubs state a price, a day ticket for guests costs €15 to €20; payment is often made in advance via MobilePay or bank transfer.
Can I fly at a Finnish club field as a model pilot from abroad?
In some cases, yes. Some clubs on our list only let members of other clubs in the Finnish air sports federation SIL fly as guests, with registration 3 to 7 days in advance and only together with a club member. The club in Kerava welcomes everyone who has an operator registration, the required theory test and liability insurance. It is best to check with the club beforehand.
Do I need to register again in Finland?
No. Under the EU drone regulation, you register in the state where you live, and you may not be registered in several states at the same time. You attach your operator number to the model.
How high can I fly in Finland?
In the open category no higher than 120 m above ground or water. In the permissive UAS zones of the model flying clubs, less strict rules apply, and with the federation authorisation SIL 16, federation members may fly up to 300 m high in suitable terrain. The Flyk website and Fintraffic Sky show restricted areas and zones.
Do I need insurance in Finland?
Under EU law, liability insurance is only compulsory from 20 kg; however, Traficom also recommends it for lighter models. If you fly under a club authorisation according to Art. 16, adequate liability insurance is required, and the clubs on our list usually require it.
