In short

In Belgium we have checked 10 RC tracks, 13 model airfields and 3 waters for model boats one by one on the clubs‘ own websites. A guest day ticket costs €5 to €15 at the clubs that state a price. EU rules apply to drones, and liability insurance is compulsory even under 20 kg. At club fields you only fly with a brevet; according to the AAM, as a guest from abroad you become a member of a Belgian club for the duration of your stay.

The umbrella organisation for RC car clubs is the FBA; according to the federation, anyone driving on a track of an FBA club needs a licence with supplementary insurance (member licence €10). Model flying is organised by two federations: the VML for Flanders and the Dutch-speaking clubs in Brussels, and the AAM for the French- and German-speaking clubs. Since 2023 a dedicated chapter of the Royal Decree has governed club model flying – flying takes place only at approved model airfields and with a brevet.

What are the rules in Belgium?

These associations are responsible in Belgium:

  • FBA – Federation Belgian Automodelsports: FBA is a non-profit association of Belgian RC car clubs and, by its own account, the only body in Belgium recognised by the international federations – EFRA recognises just one federation per country. It runs the official Belgian championships, including 1:10 electric buggy, 1:8 nitro/brushless buggy, electric and nitro on-road, Mini-Z and large scale.
  • VML – Vereniging voor Modelluchtvaartsport: VML promotes, coordinates and leads model flying in the Flemish Community – in Flanders and among the Dutch-speaking clubs in Brussels – and trains model pilots. According to its website it has 60 affiliated clubs, 2,409 members and 2,358 brevets (pilot certificates) obtained.
  • AAM – Association d’Aéromodélisme: AAM brings together the model flying clubs of Belgium’s French-speaking and German-speaking Communities, represents its members before the authorities and fields teams at FAI European and World Championships. It holds a collective insurance policy with Ethias for all members, valid in Belgium and abroad.

Missing an entry?

For East Flanders, Hainaut, Namur and the province of Luxembourg we have not yet found an RC track with current evidence on its own club website, for Flemish Brabant and Brussels no model airfield yet, and for most provinces no club water yet. Several club websites could not be checked. Do you know an active club that is missing here? Write to us via the contact page (in German) – we check the tip on the club’s website and add it to the list.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find an RC track in Belgium?

This page lists 10 verified tracks in 7 provinces, with surface, classes and guest driver rules. According to the FBA, for training and open races on tracks of FBA clubs you need a member licence (€10), which you get through a recognised club.

Can I fly at a Belgian club field as a model pilot from abroad?

Yes, under certain conditions: you are registered as an operator in your country of residence, have liability insurance and, according to the AAM, become a member of a Belgian club for the duration of your stay. You may take part directly in international model flying meetings (30 days at most) as a member of a foreign club.

Do I need to register again in Belgium?

No. You only register in the EU country where you live; with a registration from another EU country you can also fly in Belgium. Carry your proof of registration and operator number with you.

How high can I fly in Belgium?

In the open category no higher than 120 m above ground. The 120 m limit also applies at AAM and VML club fields; 200 m is only possible as an exception at competitions, meetings or brevet tests.

Is insurance compulsory in Belgium?

Yes. For drones under 20 kg Belgium requires liability insurance covering injury and property damage to third parties, and from 20 kg insurance under Regulation (EC) No 785/2004. In a club you are often insured through the federation’s group policy, with the AAM for example via Ethias.
