Status October 2026
In short
In Austria we have checked 10 RC tracks, 15 model airfields and 5 waters for model boats one by one on the clubs‘ own websites. A guest day ticket costs €15 to €20 at the clubs that state a price. Model aircraft and drones fall under the EU rules: from 250 g you register with Austro Control, and liability insurance is mandatory.
The umbrella association of Austria’s RC car clubs is the ÖFMAV; model flying clubs are organised in the Austrian Aero Club, which has more than 300 member clubs. Several of the tracks host rounds of the Austrian championship in 2026, the MORAC-Ring in Kirchberg an der Raab also for 1:5 large-scale cars. Model pilots from Vienna fly outside the city, the 1. HMS Wien for example on the Stettner Berg in Lower Austria.

What are the rules in Austria?
These associations are responsible in Austria:
- ÖFMAV – Oesterreichischer Funk-Modell-Auto-Verband: Umbrella association of Austria’s RC car clubs; according to its statutes it is affiliated with the European federation EFRA and runs the Austrian championships in all classes.
- Österreichischer Aero Club (ÖAeC) – Bundessektion Modellflugsport: With more than 12,000 members and over 300 member clubs, it represents Austria’s model flyers and model flying clubs nationally and in the FAI’s expert committees.
The key points from the law and official pages (retrieved 10/10/2026):
- Drones and model aircraft in Austria fall under the EU drone rules (Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947); the competent authority is Austro Control GmbH (RIS – Luftfahrtgesetz (LFG) § 24j).
- From 250 g you must register as an operator with Austro Control (Dronespace) – below 250 g only if the device has a sensor such as a camera that can capture personal data (toys excepted); the minimum age for registration is 18, and the registration number must be attached to the device (Austro Control – Dronespace (FAQ)).
- Anyone flying drones over 250 g needs a proof of competency in addition to registration: a free online course with an online test on dronespace.at (minimum age 16); a certificate obtained in another EU country is also valid in Austria (Austro Control – Dronespace (FAQ)).
- In the ‚Open‘ category the maximum permitted height is 120 metres, and you must always keep direct visual line of sight with your model (Austro Control – Dronespace (FAQ)).
- Model flying is possible without a permit in the ‚Open‘ category (e.g. subcategory A3), but then only with the online course and test; alternatively you can fly within a model flying club that has applied to Austro Control for an authorisation (Austro Control – Dronespace (FAQ)).
- Even when flying in a club you must register as an operator on dronespace.at; the club authorisation can also cover temporary members (e.g. during a holiday or a competition) if the club ensures they comply with its conditions (Austro Control – Leitfaden Modellflug (PDF)).
- Liability insurance is mandatory: the insurance and liability provisions of the Aviation Act (§§ 146–168 LFG) also apply to drones and model aircraft – the only exception being ‚Open‘ category devices that do not require registration; you enter the policy number when registering, and blanket policies (including in model flying associations under Art. 16) are permitted (RIS – Luftfahrtgesetz (LFG) § 24j Abs. 3).
- On every flight you must carry proof of insurance and your registration confirmation and show them on request; registration is valid for three years (RIS – Luftfahrtgesetz (LFG) § 24j Abs. 4–5).
- Under § 88 of the Austrian Road Traffic Act (StVO), ‚games of any kind‘ are prohibited on the carriageway – except in residential streets (Wohnstraßen) and on carriageways the authority has opened for this by ordinance; so your RC car is better off on a track (RIS – StVO 1960 § 88).

Missing an entry?
For Vienna, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Burgenland we have not yet found an RC track with recent activity on the club’s own website, and for Vienna no model airfield within the city limits. Do you know an active club that is missing? Write to us via the contact page (in German) – we check the tip on the club’s website and add it to the list.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find an RC track in Austria?
This page lists 10 verified tracks in 5 federal states, each with surface, classes and guest rules. The umbrella association is the ÖFMAV, which also runs the Austrian championships.
Do I have to register my model aircraft in Austria?
From 250 g yes, with Austro Control via dronespace.at; below 250 g only if it carries a camera or another sensor that can capture personal data. The registration number must be attached to the model.
Is my EU drone certificate from another country valid in Austria?
Yes. According to Austro Control, a proof of competency from another EU country is also valid in Austria. Under the EU rules you register in the country where you live.
Can I fly at an Austrian model airfield while on holiday?
At many clubs yes, usually only after registering with the club and when a member is present. According to Austro Control’s guide, a club’s authorisation can also cover temporary members, for example on holiday. Guest rules and fees are in the profiles: at the clubs that state a price, a guest day costs €2 to €15, and one club charges nothing.
Do I need insurance for my model aircraft in Austria?
Yes. The liability provisions of the Austrian Aviation Act also apply to drones and model aircraft; the only exception is ‚Open‘ category devices that do not need registration. Carry your proof of insurance and registration confirmation on every flight.
